What we compared and why
- Clean-water tank. Both makers state 96 ounces (three-quarters of a gallon). We show it to confirm the tie rather than to rank.
- Hose length. On stairs, a longer hose means more treads cleaned before you move the machine.
- Cord length. Sets how far from the outlet the machine can sit.
- Hose rinse. A named rinse feature makes flushing the hose after a job a short step.

Hoover CleanSlate XL (FH15000V)
Who it fits: You want the longer stated hose of the two, 5 feet on Hoover's page, and a hose rinse tool named in the listing.
Skip it if: Storage is a shelf rather than a closet floor; a 96-ounce portable is a large machine to keep.

BISSELL SpotClean Pet Pro (2458)
Who it fits: You want the same 96-ounce tank, a stain trapper tool BISSELL names for pet messes, and a 4-foot hose is enough for your stairs.
Skip it if: A named hose rinse tool matters to you; BISSELL's page for the 2458 names none.
A tie on tank, a difference on hose
Hoover states a 96-ounce clean tank for the CleanSlate XL, and BISSELL states three-quarters of a gallon for the SpotClean Pet Pro, which is the same 96 ounces. Hoover states a 22-foot cord; BISSELL's page gives the 2458's cord as 22 feet in its spec table and 20 feet in its "what's in the box" summary, so the table shows both. The published figures separate them in two places: the hose (5 feet on the Hoover, 4 feet on the BISSELL) and the tools (a hose rinse tool named in the Hoover listing; a stain trapper tool for pet messes on BISSELL's page, and no rinse tool).
What 96 ounces means against a mini
These are the large end of portable machines. The smallest portables in our guides, such as the BISSELL Little Green Mini, state 16 ounces. Six fills of a 16-ounce machine equal one fill of either of these. If your jobs are stairs top to bottom, a sofa, or several rooms of spots, that is why a big-tank portable exists. If your jobs are one fresh spot at a time, the extra water is weight you carry for nothing; see spot cleaner or full-size carpet cleaner.
The extra foot of hose, on stairs
Stairs built to the 2021 International Residential Code rise at most 7 3/4 inches with treads at least 10 inches deep, so one step along the slope of the stair is roughly 12 to 13 inches. A 5-foot hose therefore reaches about four or five treads above the machine; a 4-foot hose about three or four. On a 13-step flight that is roughly three moves of the machine with the Hoover and four with the BISSELL. Your stairs may differ; measure one step and divide your hose length by it. The working is set out in full in carpet cleaners for stairs and upholstery.
Rinsing after the job
The CleanSlate XL listing names a hose rinse tool for flushing clean water through the hose. BISSELL's page for the SpotClean Pet Pro 2458 does not name one. Any hose can be flushed by spraying clean water through it, as the manuals describe; a named tool makes it quicker and keeps the step from being skipped.
Which one if...
- Stairs are your main job: the CleanSlate XL, for the longer stated hose.
- Pet accidents on stairs and furniture: the SpotClean Pet Pro, for the stain trapper tool BISSELL names.
- Neither, because your spots are small: a smaller portable such as those in Little Green vs CleanSlate.
Reading the table
Every figure with a mark comes from the maker's own spec page for that exact model number, linked under Sources: Hoover's page lists FH15000V, the model in this listing, and BISSELL's page lists the 2458. BISSELL states the tank as three-quarters of a gallon; we converted it to ounces (one gallon is 128 ounces).
What this page does not tell you
We have not used either machine and we do not rank them. We make no claim about how well either one lifts stains or how long fabric takes to dry.
