What we compared and why

  1. The job first, the brand second. A brand comparison only makes sense within one kind of machine. A Shark upright against a BISSELL spot cleaner answers nothing, so we pair by job.
  2. Corded or cordless. Within each job, the bigger split is usually power, not brand. Check it per model before you compare brands; the lineup map below says what each listing or maker name tells you.
  3. Weight. The listing weight shows how much you lift onto stairs or carry to the car. Within a pair the two are often close; across jobs they differ a lot.
  4. Formulas, parts and filters. Washing machines from both brands use their maker's formulas and replacement parts. Staying with one brand for every washing machine means one set of formulas in the cupboard.

The models compared

Read at this page's build and converted to one unit by us; sources as in the key above. "Not stated in listing": the listing does not give it. "Listing gives two values": it states two, so we show neither.

Shark Navigator Lift-Away (NV352), upright vacuum

Shark Navigator Lift-Away (NV352), upright vacuum

Who it fits: Carpeted homes that want a full-size upright; the Lift-Away name refers to a pod that lifts off the base for stairs and furniture.

Skip it if: You want a light vacuum for daily pickup; a stick vacuum is easier to grab.

BISSELL CleanView Swivel Pet (2252), upright vacuum

BISSELL CleanView Swivel Pet (2252), upright vacuum

Who it fits: Carpeted homes with pets that want BISSELL's counterpart to the Navigator: a full-size upright aimed at pet hair, per its name.

Skip it if: You need a vacuum that converts for stairs without carrying the whole upright; check that it has the tool you need.

Shark Cordless Pet (IY143H), stick vacuum

Shark Cordless Pet (IY143H), stick vacuum

Who it fits: Quick daily pickup of pet hair on mixed floors without a cord.

Skip it if: You clean a whole large home in one go; a stick vacuum's battery sets the limit.

BISSELL PowerClean (4173), self-standing cordless stick vacuum

BISSELL PowerClean (4173), self-standing cordless stick vacuum

Who it fits: The BISSELL counterpart for daily cordless pickup, with a self-standing design named in its title.

Skip it if: Your main complaint is long hair wrapping the brush; compare the anti-tangle wording in our stick vacuum guide first.

Shark HydroVac MessMaster (WD161), wet-dry floor cleaner

Shark HydroVac MessMaster (WD161), wet-dry floor cleaner

Who it fits: Hard floors where you want vacuuming and washing in one pass from Shark, with a cord so there is no battery limit; its listing gives it as corded.

Skip it if: You want cordless; this model is corded.

BISSELL CrossWave Edge (4111A), wet-dry floor cleaner

BISSELL CrossWave Edge (4111A), wet-dry floor cleaner

Who it fits: The BISSELL counterpart for hard floors: vacuums and washes in one pass, with edge cleaning in its name; BISSELL sells the cordless version under a separate model number.

Skip it if: You need the power type settled before you buy; the listing does not state it, and BISSELL also sells a CrossWave Edge Cordless (4329F).

Shark StainStriker (PX201), portable spot cleaner

Shark StainStriker (PX201), portable spot cleaner

Who it fits: Spots on rugs, stairs, upholstery and car seats from Shark's portable range.

Skip it if: You clean whole rooms of carpet; a portable spot cleaner is for spots.

BISSELL Little Green Pet Deluxe (3353), portable spot cleaner

BISSELL Little Green Pet Deluxe (3353), portable spot cleaner

Who it fits: The BISSELL counterpart: a portable spot cleaner from the Little Green line, aimed at pet stains.

Skip it if: You need a stated hose length to plan stair work; the listing does not give one.

Shark CarpetXpert HairPro (EX251BRN), full-size carpet cleaner

Shark CarpetXpert HairPro (EX251BRN), full-size carpet cleaner

Who it fits: Whole rooms of carpet from Shark, in an upright that also handles stains with built-in tools, per its title.

Skip it if: You mostly clean single spots; a portable unit is easier to store and carry.

BISSELL TurboClean Pet (3948), full-size carpet cleaner

BISSELL TurboClean Pet (3948), full-size carpet cleaner

Who it fits: Whole rooms of carpet from BISSELL; BISSELL states an 80 oz tank, a 7 ft hose and a 20 ft cord for this model (see our carpet cleaner comparison).

Skip it if: You expect 'self-cleaning' to mean a machine rinse cycle; BISSELL uses the word for a hand tool on this model.

Why "Shark or BISSELL" needs a job first

Shark and BISSELL overlap across most of the floor-care aisle, but the names do not line up. Shark calls its portable spot cleaner StainStriker and BISSELL calls its own Little Green; Shark's wet-dry floor cleaner is the HydroVac and BISSELL's is the CrossWave. Comparing "Shark" with "BISSELL" as brands mixes those up. This page pairs one current model from each brand for five jobs, so the comparison is like for like. It is research-based, from the current listings and the makers' pages; we have not used these machines side by side.

Once the job is fixed, the remaining differences are corded or cordless, tank and hose figures, and how each maker words its hair-handling claims. Check power type per model: the two sticks are cordless by name and listing, the HydroVac MessMaster's listing gives it as corded, and the CrossWave Edge (4111A) listing does not state a power type, while BISSELL also sells a cordless CrossWave Edge (4329F). Check each listing's power type before you buy.

A decision rule in three steps

  1. Name the job. Pick the row that matches the mess you have most often. If you are not sure which kind of machine you need, start with which floor cleaner do I need.
  2. Check the figure that job depends on. For a carpet cleaner it is tank and hose; for a spot cleaner it is hose and cord; for a stick vacuum it is runtime and the anti-tangle wording; for a wet-dry floor cleaner it is corded or cordless and the brush self-clean. Our job guides compare those figures across more models than this page does.
  3. Only then compare brands. If both models meet your figure, the tie-breaker is practical: formulas and filters you already own, and which brand's parts you can find for that model.

Where to compare each job in depth

Formulas: a reason to stay with one brand

Both brands sell their washing machines alongside their own cleaning formulas, and each maker's manual names the formulas to use. If you own one brand's carpet cleaner and add a spot cleaner or a floor washer, staying with the same brand can mean one set of formulas instead of two. Check the manual of each machine before mixing formulas between brands.

What the weight column tells you

The weight column shows the listing's weight for each model where the listing gives one. Read it within a row of the lineup map, not across rows: an upright vacuum and a full-size carpet cleaner do different jobs, and the carpet cleaner's weight before you fill its tank is not what you push across the floor.

What this page does not tell you

We have not used these machines, and we do not rank the brands. We do not say which brand cleans better, lasts longer or has better support. The pairs are current examples of each job, not the only models each brand sells.
